Practical project in Media Studies: Communicating “LebensWert”!

How do I gain supporters for social commitments of an organization? How do I integrate media? And how does online communication succeed? These questions stood at the center of an exciting project in Media Studies at BiTS Iserlohn in cooperation with “LebensWert Iserlohn e.V.”

The client for the students was “LebensWert Iserlohn e.V.”: This organization supports the work of the Checkpoint youth center, the Lichtblick social center, and FlüchtlingsNetzWerk (Refugee Network). All three institutions have been connecting people from different backgrounds, denominations, and religions in the city of Iserlohn for many years. The organization wanted to gain more activists locally and regionally as supporters for its work.

The task for BiTS students: Five teams from the “Journalism & Business Communication” and “Communication & Media Management” programs made their first experience working with a client from the real world. From the briefing to the pitch, the groups worked under enormous pressure on online communication plans, creative ideas for location PR and media relations, briefed among others by the Chairperson of the Trustees Sönke Kühl and supported by Prof. Silke Hahn.

The pitches brought great results and it was a good first insight into agency work for the students. “I was impressed by the commitment and professionalism of the students,” says Sönke Kühl, Chairperson of the Trustees of “LebensWert Iserlohn e.V.” Youth adviser Timon Tesche, Head of Checkpoint Iserlohn, adds: “The students gave us valuable and absolutely workable inspiration from professional viewpoints.”

From the point of view of Daniel Schöning, Chairperson of LebensWert Iserlohn e.V., it was “ultimately the time-consuming research by the students that led to excellent individual approaches for our multifaceted project.” A member of the jury and Head of Media Marketing at the Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger, Andreas Kohring, liked “the different strategies and approaches that led to possible solutions and development of professional communication for a charitable project. The students demonstrated their heartfelt commitment through their presentations.”
